Emotion -is It Measurable ?

چکیده

In this work a texture paradigm is introduced as a means for modeling certain types of music organization. This approach allows quantitatively to assess diierences between musical materials which are not captured by musical \rules" or schemes. In the context of emotion it is assumed that relations exist between deviations from a given, existing 'normative' musical organisation and expressive innections. Excitement and calmness are considered as deviations from a normative state that a given texture state induces. Diierent types of textures are considered and the degree of change is measured by statistical distance between their probabilistic models. This method is suggested to be a way to measure the amount of change (degree of innection) that occurs in the musical material. An implementation of this work in a simple midi real time system is given. A short Prelude-"Can you imagine a system that evaluates the amount of emotional aaect present in a music piece ?" I ask.-"But this is completely absurd!" one might immediately respond. "Emotion is completely subjective, its sense being impounded by one's cultural and social backgrounds, aesthetic preferences and even momentary moods, predispositions and the most seeming-less, eeting sensations ..."-"All right", I insist. "But let us assume a more limited system, let's say just something like a set of dials that dance according to the music as it changes towards more tense vs. more calm, becoming more soothing or more arousing ? Does this still require so much prior knowledge ?"-"May be not, but then how can you deene a measure of such changes ? Music is such a complex phenomena , with the interplay between its parameters being completely un-graspable !"-"So let us consider just a very simple music-let's say an aleatoric texture or an ambient sound-may be now we can ?" ...

When is the ring of real measurable functions a hereditary ring?

‎Let $M(X‎, ‎mathcal{A}‎, ‎mu)$ be the ring of real-valued measurable functions‎ ‎on a measure space $(X‎, ‎mathcal{A}‎, ‎mu)$‎. ‎In this paper‎, ‎we characterize the maximal ideals in the rings of real measurable functions‎ ‎and as a consequence‎, ‎we determine when $M(X‎, ‎mathcal{A}‎, ‎mu)$ is a hereditary ring.

How emotion is made and measured

How we design and evaluate for emotions depends crucially on what we take emotions to be. In affective computing, affect is often taken to be another kind of information discrete units or states internal to an individual that can be transmitted in a loss-free manner from people to computational systems and back. While affective computing explicitly challenges the primacy of rationality in cogni...

Physiological Sensing of Emotion

Physiological changes have long been associated with emotion. Although the relative role of cognitive versus physiological processes in emotion has been debated, it is acknowledged that in almost all cases, measurable physiological changes co-occur with emotion, for example: changes in heart rate, sweat level, muscle tension, breathing rate, facial expression and electrical activity in the brai...

Metaphor and music emotion: Ancient views and future directions.

Music is often described in terms of emotion. This notion is supported by empirical evidence showing that engaging with music is associated with subjective feelings, and with objectively measurable responses at the behavioural, physiological, and neural level. Some accounts, however, reject the idea that music may directly induce emotions. For example, the 'paradox of negative emotion', whereby...

Re-Reading Mulla Sadra on the Intersection of Cognition and Emotion

Human emotions are in connection with his deeds on the one hand and his perceptions on the other, and this complicates the analysis of emotion. Furthermore, any school of thought in search of presenting a comprehensive perspective on the human should clarify its stance with regard to emotion and the position it has in the structure of human cognition and deeds. This fact places the answer to th...

Image Recoloring with Valence-Arousal Emotion Model

We introduce an affective image recoloring method for changing the overall mood in the image in a numerically measurable way. Given a semantically segmented source image and a target emotion, our system finds reference image segments from the collection of images that have been tagged via crowdsourcing with numerically measured emotion labels. We then recolorize the source segments using colors...
